For anyone with even a passing interest in dance culture, old-skool UK rave terrorists The Prodigy are just one of ‘those’ acts. Throughout the 90s, producer Liam Howlett and co came to represent everything anarchic and subversive about dance culture, releasing two seminal albums with Music for the Jilted Generation and Fat of the Land as well as enduring anthems like Outer Space, No Good (Start the Dance) and Smack My Bitch Up that have stood the test of time. They’re also easily one of the most energized and ferocious live performers to ever work in dance. The announcement of the Big Day Out lineup late last year received a mixed response in some quarters, but for ITMers it was happy days indeed. The Prodigy were coming back to play again; who gives a f*@k about anything or anybody else?

After all these years, The Prodigy are still pretty pissed off. “That’s just me as a person, man,” Liam told ITM. “Everything in my music reflects who I am. I don’t walk around angry, but that’s my undercurrent of discontent, I’ve always got that about me. That’s what keeps me hungry to keep writing music… The Prodigy have always been an outsider since the beginning, since the early explosion of rave culture. We always sat on the edge looking in.”

The Prodigy’s new album Invaders Must Die is on the cusp of release, and Liam calls it a ‘triumphant’ release for the band. The live clips doing the rounds on the mnet would suggest The Prodigy are back at their explosive best, and the band will be ready for battle when they take to the Boiler Room stage alter this month. ITM’s Angus Paterson talks to The Prodigy as they lock and load, apply their war paint and get ready to kick your ass into February, when they’ll piss off again out of the country.
