Andy Serkis' Star Wars: The Force Awakens Character Revealed
29 May 2015

Meet Supreme Leader Snoke. Well, sort of...

Image

No, this is not the final look for Andy Serkis’s gravel-voiced character in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. The picture, as you’ll have guessed, shows him in his performance-capture rig. But we do at least now know his character’s name thanks to Vanity Fair and the official Star Wars site: Supreme Leader Snoke.

We’ll have to wait to see what Snoke actually looks like once ILM have worked their industrial light-based magic on his performance, but it’s safe to say that Snoke is probably not the friendliest sort. It’s not mentioned in the piece on the site, but we’d wager a hefty bag of credits that he’s the top dog in the First Order, born from the ruins of the Galactic Empire. That's his voice talking over the original teaser for the film.

The image is a shot that was never published in the Vanity Fair issue, which saw Annie Leibovitz photographing the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, who J.J. Abrams compares to Marlon Brando, according to Leibovitz.

We’ll have to wait and see exactly how Serkis fits into the continuing story in that galaxy far, far away, but 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' will be with us on December 18.

J.J. Abrams Confirms Final Cut Is His, Says 'Star Wars' Is Not Being Disney-fied
10 October 2015

Image

The toys are already in stores, a new trailer is imminent, but the big event is still a couple of months away: the release of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'. And with the movie coming up, you might have forgotten that over a year ago, there were rumors that things weren't going quite so smoothly behind-the-scenes. The word on the street was that following Harrison Ford's injury on set, J.J. Abrams and Kathleen Kennedy had asked Disney to push the release date of 'The Force Awakens' to May 4, 2016 — a request they had also made prior to the actor's accident — only to have it turned down by Mouse House honcho Bob Iger. But whatever transpired, heading into the final sprint, Abrams couldn't be more thrilled with his working relationship with Disney.

Sitting down with Apple designer Jony Ive, in a great talk moderated by Brian Grazer for Vanity Fair, the director reveals not only that he has final cut, but that Disney is treating the valuable brand they paid billions of dollars for with the utmost respect.

Asked by Grazer directly if he had final cut, Abrams confirmed he did — "Yeah, yeah" — but also noted that "when you do a Disney project, there’s a clause in there that you kind of go, ‘Well, if I were a lawyer I could probably drive a truck through it....' "

If I were to make a guess, Disney probably has it in their contract they can take the movie out of Abrams' hands if they want to (which is not uncommon with any blockbuster costing hundreds of millions of dollars), but as the director asserts, "They let us make the movie we wanted to make", calling Iger an "incredible collaborator" on the movie.

"I cannot say enough about how Bog Iger and Alan Horn have understood this thing that is now part of the Disney company", Abrams added. "And they’re not trying to Disney-fy it, they’re not doing anything other than, I think, an incredibly smart thing, which is letting Kathleen Kennedy — who is a remarkable person and producer — run and lead Lucasfilm to a place where I think it wants to go."

As expectations continue to rise for 'The Force Awakens' in the weeks to come, it nice to hear Abrams' undeniable enthusiasm for how things have gone with Disney, and how he feels about their handling of such a beloved property.

What We Learned from the Final 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Poster
19 October 2015

Image

Over the weekend, Lucasfilm and Disney released the final poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The poster had a few reveals, some of which you might have noticed (is that a third Death Star?) and others which were hidden in the fine print and subtext. Before the last trailer gets unleashed later today, let’s take a look at what we learned from this new poster.

You’ve probably already seen it by now, and if you’re a Star Wars obsessive like me, you may have even spent way too much time staring at it. Warning: possible spoilers (or at the very least character and location information) may follow.

Introducing Maz Kanata

Who is that new alien creature standing to the left of R2-D2? At first I thought it might be Teedo, the small, brutish scavenger that we have seen on top of his semi-mechanical Luggabeast in the photo that was released of Rey getting BB-8 out of netting.

But I can confirm that it is not Teedo, but instead Maz Kanata, the character that Lupita Nyong’o plays in the film. Yes, Nyong’o believed we wouldn’t see the character until we saw the film (probably because she plays some kind of spoiler-ific role in the storyline), but it looks like J.J. Abrams and crew decided to include her character on the poster. As you know, Nyong’o performed the role using performance capture. We don’t know much about her role in the story, only that she plays a female pirate on Takodana. She owns a castle which has played host to travelers, smugglers and other riffraffs.

Starkiller Base

I’m not sure why everyone is surprised by the thing that looks like a third Death Star on the poster. Why did everyone assume that a thing called “Starkiller Base” was just a simple military base? The name of the base was accidentally revealed at Comic-Con by Domhnall Gleeson. The base is obviously inspired by the original surname for Skywalker in the first draft of the script for the first Star Wars movie.

According to the official Star Wars databank, Starkiller Base is “an ice planet converted into a stronghold of the First Order and armed with a fiercely destructive new weapon capable of destroying entire star systems.” Remember all the snow on the ground when Kylo Ren faces off against Finn in a lightsaber duel?

Let’s take a moment to think about this. The Death Star could destroy planets. We saw it take out Princess Leia’s homeworld of Alderaan. While its ability to blow up an entire planet made the Death Star one of the most dangerous weapons in all of cinema, the Starkiller Base could prove to be much more powerful.

Imagine a weapon that had enough power to destroy our sun. When stars die, they become black holes, right? Entire solar systems would be destroyed, and any surviving planets would be thrown off their axis and sent spinning wildly into the galaxy. With that at their disposal, it seems like the First Order may be way more powerful than the Empire ever was.

Also, building a weapon inside a planet would probably be more time effective for the First Order than, say, building an entirely new Death Star. And having it housed inside an organic planet probably means that they won’t need a thermal exhaust port, which has been shown as a weakness.

Art By Whom?

No, the poster was not painted by legendary poster artist Drew Struzan, or at least not the Photoshop composite we’re seeing. The artist came out of retirement, for what? For a D23 Expo exclusive fan teaser poster? Seems strange right? After seeing a rough cut, the artist has even publicly stated that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would probably be far and away the best Star Wars movie we’ve ever seen. So it seems weird that this final poster looks kind of like a Drew Struzan creation, but not — right?

Bryan Morton is the art director behind the poster, and thats all that we are able to say at this time. But something is really fishy here!

Michael Arndt Gets Screenwriting Credit

The credit block on the bottom of the poster reveals that Michael Arndt gets a screenwriting credit alongside J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan. Of course, Kasdan and Abrams are grouped as a team, separated by an “and” for Arndt, per WGA standards.

We had heard many rumors over the development of Star Wars Episode VII that Abrams had disagreements with Arndt over the direction of the story, and some even reported the much of Arndt’s initial treatment, which the screenwriter supposedly worked on under George Lucas before he sold off the property, was thrown out.

We had never heard that. Abrams has spoken in the past saying that Arndt wasn’t able to accomplish what he needed due to the aggressive time frame needed to complete the screenplay. I’ve heard that the finished version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens will very much have many of the same rough beats of Arndt’s original work on the film, which may be why he still gets credit on the movie.

Suggestive Placements

I wanted to discuss some of the suggestive placements in this poster design:

- The almost ying-yang placement of Rey against Kylo Ren seems to suggest a lot. While this is the second poster with Finn wielding a lightsaber, it’s also the second poster with Rey in the middle. Is Rey the real Force-sensitive in this new group?

- Grouping Han Solo and Princess Leia together might suggest they are still together in this film, which is something that has been rumored not to be the case.

Where’s Luke Skywalker?

We’ve been saying since the film was still shooting that we would probably not see Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker in any of the marketing material. Sure, we did see him briefly in the second teaser trailer (see screen capture above), but we didn’t really “see him.” We had a good source reveal all this very early on, and I’ve tweeted and included mentions in articles over the past year.

I’m not sure of the exact reason, but the filmmakers and studio think that showing Luke might reveal too much about his role in this story. Before you freak out, I wouldn’t take that as a spoiler in any way. I wouldn’t be worried that his exclusion from the poster means much of anything — it has been in the plans for a long time. Notice that the only new action figures of Luke Skywalker are of his Empire Strikes Back look, and not his appearance in this new film. A photo of Mark in Skywalker costume leaked out months ago and Disney was very aggressive in getting it removed from all of the inter webs.

No Episode Number in the Final Logo

Leading up to the poster premiere and the trailer release today, it had been reported that the final Star Wars: the Force Awakens poster would feature a new logo for the movie. It did not. The logo remains the same, which has annoyed some diehard fans as it does not include the episode number. Symmetry is important to some, and especially with these new "A Star Wars Story" films coming soon, it seemed like something that could have helped differentiate the Skywalker saga films from the anthology movies.

It’s interesting that Disney wants to keep close to the same aesthetics of the previous six films with a poster that almost looks like Struzan’s series of one-sheets, yet not have a poster by Struzan, and differentiate itself as something different and new with the new style logo.

Luke Skywalker Isn’t In 'The Force Awakens' Marketing for a Reason
27 October 2015

Image

Mark Hamill is billed second in the credits for 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', wedged right in between Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. So we know that Luke Skywalker is in the movie. The fact that the actor playing him has been given the appropriate credit confirms it. Which then takes us to the question on the tip of everyone’s tongue: where is he? His face isn’t on the poster. He doesn’t show up in any of the trailers. There have been no official photos and no LEGO sets that manage to contain massive plot spoilers in their box art. The location and status of the last proper Jedi in the galaxy is a big ol’ question mark.

Where is Luke Skywalker? "Exactly!" says J.J. Abrams as he drops a smoke bomb and vanishes into thin air, his laughter still echoing off the walls.

The Sydney Morning Herald recently caught up with Abrams and, apparently equipped with the proper charms to keep him from transforming into an eagle and flying away, they managed to ask him why Luke hasn’t been present in any of the marketing for The Force Awakens. His response is Grade-A Abrams:

"These are good questions to be asking. I can’t wait for you to find out the answers."

When pushed further, the talented but infamously secretive filmmaker would only budge slightly. He says that "It’s no accident" that Luke is absent from the trailers, which certainly implies that where he is and what happened to him is going to be an important plot point in the movie itself.

Abrams’ penchant for mystery has long been one of his defining features a director and creator and it’s been a double-edged lightsaber. On one hand, he’s right: why not go into the theater without knowing every plot point in advance? The internet has spoiled fandom, transforming us into a bunch of Veruca Salts who feel entitled to know everything about a movie a year before it hits theaters. Abrams only wants to surprise and delight us – there is nothing more noble. His insistence on keeping basic plot details and character names and costumes under wraps is admirable and brave and makes him into something of a hero.

However, his insistence on keeping basic plot details and character names and costumes under wraps is also profoundly annoying and it forces fans to descend into the darkest bowels of the internet to trade in leaked concept art and stolen photos to get their fix. If you actually, truly, really want to know where Luke Skywalker is, the answers are out there – it is a simple web search away, as 'The Force Awakens' has been a pretty leaky ship. Could this kind of ravenous self-spoiling be avoided if Abrams and Lucasfilm dropped just a few more tidbits of information on the regular? That’s the other big question, second only to to "Where the hell is Luke Skywalker?"

The same interviewer did get a few more questions with Mr. Abrams, who says that the film is almost finished:

"The visual effects process goes on for so long that my guess is that we’ll be doing visual effects for the next three or four week, even though the cut will be done before then … We still have another scoring session with John Williams, who is a god when it comes to music. It’s been an ongoing surreal experience and I just cannot wait for the movie to be out in the world."

In other words, Abrams won’t have a second to relax until 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' actually opens on December 18, 2015.

'The Force Awakens' International Trailer Is Packed with New Footage
6 November 2015

Image

That last 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' trailer was supposed to be, well, the last 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' trailer. And it was — in the U.S. Japan, however, got a different version of the trailer today. We’re not just talking a recut version of the same ones we’ve already seen. This one has some very interesting new footage.

Director J.J. Abrams had promised that 'Force Awakens' trailer from last month would be it, but apparently he didn’t count on international marketing. While the Japanese trailer isn’t wall-to-wall new footage, there’s a lot of new stuff to see here. Like Rey encountering Kylo Ren, or meeting Finn for the first time. And there’s new dialogue to go with those scenes as well. Like Rey’s mention of her family, which is bound to get those "is Rey a Skywalker" debates going all over again. Or Maz Kanata’s declaration that "hope is not lost today. It is found". And BB-8 gets to speak up. [Slashfilm]

J.J. Abrams, Star Wars Superfan, on Directing 'The Force Awakens'
9 November 2015

Image

Step through the sleek, anonymous metal door of J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and you enter a world of memorabilia—the murderous Talky Tina doll from The Twilight Zone, rows of old VHS tapes labeled “Midnight Movies,” a Six Million Dollar Man board game, assorted Godzillas. But if you look closely (we looked closely) you will see a meticulousness to the madness: The props and tchotchkes are all dust-free and carefully arranged. Those vintage 1970s Star Trek action figures aren’t just sitting there. They’re posed. This stuff is well loved. It’s clear that in addition to being one of the most gifted movie directors in the world, somehow the heir apparent to both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, Abrams is also a superfan.

That puts him in a precarious situation. He has inherited the one megafranchise to rule them all. Sure, this won’t be the first time Abrams resurrects a beloved Enterprise. But … this is the saga. It’s one of the things that invented modern superfandom. And this is no reboot. With The Force Awakens, Abrams is marshaling the same actors, writers, designers, and even the same composer to reanimate the characters and themes that made the original Star Wars into, well, Star Wars. He loves those movies as much as you or any of your laser-brained friends do. But when he first met those movies he was just an apprentice. Now he must become the master.

No pressure, right? After all, the stakes are merely the future of the franchise that made Abrams a filmmaker; a mythology held precious by millions of people for four decades; and, oh, right, billions and billions of dollars in movies and merch over the next half century (at least). I sat down with Abrams to ask him about balancing these competing (ahem) forces to tell an epic story from a long time ago and a galaxy far, far away. The lightsabers are drawn; the coordinates for the jump to hyperspace are calculated. Can Abrams do it? Well, you know what Yoda said about merely trying.
